Beginning Blacksmithing Classes at the Fields Pond Smithy As many have observed from passing the Curran farm in recent months, we have a new structure on site, the Fields Pond Smithy. Our functioning blacksmith shop was constructed by volunteers and financed in part by a grant from the Maine State Archives. After finishing the structure, we have sought out more equipment and tools either through purchase or loan agreement with our extended family of volunteers and patrons. We recently reached our goal of having the capability to offer beginners' blacksmithing classes! On January 6, we began our first in an ongoing series of blacksmithing classes and workshops. In previous months, we had organized the Fields Pond Blacksmithing Association, a group of blacksmithing enthusiasts, amateurs, and professionals to assist us in carrying out the mission of disseminating the skills and knowledge of this traditional art form. Our first class includes 8 students from ages 16-60. Stop in and see us at work. The class meets on Wednesdays, 6-8:30 PM and Saturdays, 9-11AM. The cost of tuition is $225 non-members and $200 members (the cost of a one-year membership to the Fields Pond Blacksmithing Association allowing year round use of the smithy is $25.00). This is a 45 hour/10 week course that includes tool making and other projects (see our blog for more details). A second course is scheduled to begin on February 2; it is full. A third class is scheduled to begin Friday, February 5; it is full. There are still places available in the class in our Tuesday, April 13, 6-8:30 class. Tuition is $225 non-members and $200 members. In order to reserve your place in the limited class of 8 you will need to pay the tuition by check and hand deliver this to Irv Marsters, Bangor Letter Shop, Penobscot Plaza, 99 Washington St,.
